Faith & Spirit Quote by Francis of Assisi

"If God can work through me, he can work through anyone"

About this Quote

A line like this is humility with teeth. Francis of Assisi isn’t polishing his halo; he’s dismantling the whole idea that spiritual authority belongs to the naturally pure, the educated, or the institutionally endorsed. The genius is the conditional: “If God can work through me...” He positions himself as unlikely material, not a special conduit. That rhetorical self-demotion becomes an invitation, even a provocation. It tells the listener: stop waiting to be worthy.

The subtext is quietly insurgent in a medieval context where holiness often arrived packaged as hierarchy, Latin learning, and clerical status. Francis, the merchant’s son who renounced wealth and leaned into radical poverty, turns sanctity into a practice rather than a pedigree. He’s also reframing agency. The sentence credits God as the prime mover, but it simultaneously expands the roster of people who can be moved. “Anyone” is the radical word: the poor, the sick, the socially disposable, the layperson with dirty hands and no theological credentials.

It works because it’s both consoling and corrective. Consoling, because it lowers the bar of entry without lowering the stakes: you don’t need a spotless past to be used for good. Corrective, because it punctures spiritual elitism; if even Francis claims to be unexceptional, what excuse does anyone else have for treating grace like a private club?

In a culture obsessed with merit and optics, the line still bites: the point isn’t your brand of goodness, it’s your availability.
