"If I were in the Beatles, I'd be a good George Harrison"
About this Quote
Choosing “a good George Harrison” is where the subtext sharpens. He doesn’t claim Lennon’s genius-martyr aura or McCartney’s melodic sainthood. He picks the role historically framed as under-credited, quietly lethal: the guy who doesn’t need to be the loudest to be essential. It’s self-mythology tailored to his brand. Gallagher positions himself as the songwriter with taste, bite, and restraint, the one who can deliver the curveball (“Something,” “Here Comes the Sun”) while rolling his eyes at the circus.
There’s also a class-conscious Britishness to it. Oasis built an empire by translating Beatles-derived melodicism into swagger for the post-industrial 90s, when “Cool Britannia” wanted icons who felt both legendary and reachable. Gallagher’s quip acknowledges the hierarchy while keeping his ego intact: he accepts a “supporting” slot only because Harrison, in hindsight, looks like the smartest man in the room.
The line works because it flatters the Beatles, flatters George, and sneaks in a claim about Noel - that he’s the underrated pillar, not the crowned king.
