Faith & Spirit Quote by Aleister Crowley

"If one were to take the Bible seriously, one would go mad. But to take the Bible seriously, one must be already mad"

About this Quote

Crowley’s line is a trapdoor disguised as a syllogism: approach the Bible with literal seriousness and you either lose your mind, or you prove you never had it. The point isn’t theology so much as power. By framing “taking it seriously” as a symptom of madness, he denies scripture the dignified status of an argument; it becomes a psychiatric tell. That’s a classic Crowley move: don’t debate the priest on his terms, delegitimize the entire courtroom.

The wit comes from the double bind. The first clause concedes the Bible’s intensity - read straight, it can feel like a fever dream of violence, miracles, and absolute demands. The second clause yanks away the sympathy: if it breaks you, you were predisposed. Crowley turns religious devotion from moral virtue into cognitive pathology. It’s an insult with a pseudo-logical sheen, designed to sound inevitable, not merely rude.

Context matters. Crowley built a career on scandal and counter-religion, styling himself as prophet, magician, and anti-Victorian provocateur. In a culture where biblical literacy was still a badge of respectability, calling literal belief “madness” wasn’t just edgy; it was strategic branding. The subtext is recruitment: if you’re one of the “sane,” you’ll recognize the Bible as a text to be interpreted, played with, or rejected - and you might be ready for Crowley’s alternative canon.

The line also exposes an anxiety: scripture’s authority depends on a certain kind of seriousness. Crowley’s real target is that seriousness itself, the posture of submission.
