"If only I was as eloquent as Demosthenes, I would have to do no more than repeat a single word three times"
About this Quote
The “single word” is doing a lot of quiet work. Hamann never specifies it, because the point is that the decisive thing can’t be neatly cashed out as a chain of premises. It might be “God,” “faith,” “heart,” “Christ,” “revelation” - the kinds of anchors his era’s rationalists treated as embarrassing leftovers. By leaving the word blank, he taunts his opponents: you can build systems all day, but one stubborn, irreducible claim will keep returning and refusing to be domesticated.
The threefold repetition matters too. It echoes liturgical cadence and biblical emphasis more than courtroom logic: persuasion as incantation, witness, and insistence rather than “proof.” Hamann, a key early critic of Enlightenment rationalism and a proto-Romantic irritant, is hinting that language isn’t a transparent pipeline for ideas. It’s thick with history, symbol, and authority. The subtext is almost trolling: if you really understood how rhetoric works, you’d realize that the clean, reasonable argument is often the least effective tool. The world is moved by what it can’t fully justify.
