"If they had Mozart today, they couldn't work with him, although he was a very adaptable man"
About this Quote
The line pivots on a sly reversal. Mozart, Kluge insists, was “very adaptable” - the kind of talent contemporary institutions claim to prize. Yet “they couldn’t work with him.” That “they” is doing heavy lifting: commissioning editors, grant panels, orchestral boards, legal departments, streaming-era A&R, all the gatekeepers whose job is to translate creativity into schedules, deliverables, and brand safety. In Kluge’s world (and he’s spent a career anatomizing postwar German institutions), adaptability doesn’t save you when the machine’s true preference is predictability.
The subtext is about incompatibility between artistic intelligence and managerial rationality. Mozart wrote fast, revised on the fly, and moved between church, court, and public markets; he also carried debts, conflicts, and a temperament that didn’t respect hierarchy. Contemporary cultural production loves the idea of the difficult genius, but only after it’s been stabilized into a catalog, a biopic arc, a “legacy.” If Mozart arrived as a living, negotiating, improvising worker, he’d trigger compliance alarms.
Kluge’s intent lands as a bleak joke: the modern world has built more tools than ever to “support” art, then designed them to screen out the very kind of volatile, surplus creativity that makes art matter.
