His own career was a rebuttal to that utilitarian mood, using medieval forms as a critique of modern fragmentation. When he says "the nature of our institutions would not matter", he's not naive about power; he's betting that a thick, shared ethic can domesticate power before it hardens into bureaucracy. It's a seductive claim - and a dangerous one, too, because it assumes consensus is attainable without coercion, and that "infusion" won't become enforcement.
