Context matters: Winterbottom emerged from a strain of British filmmaking suspicious of prestige narratives that domesticate uncomfortable realities. His work often chases immediacy and messiness, resisting the neat hero’s journey. Here he’s critiquing a common media logic of the 1990s Balkans coverage in particular, when complex conflicts were frequently filtered through foreign correspondents and NGOs, turning local agency into background noise.

What makes the line work is its blunt shift in grammar: from Sarajevo as subject to Sarajevo as object. Once you center the outsider, the place is no longer the story - it’s a stage.
