Life & Wisdom Quote by Maya Angelou

"If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude"

About this Quote

Angelou’s line is self-help with teeth: it refuses the luxury of passive dissatisfaction. The first sentence is a dare, framed in plain talk that sounds like kitchen-table wisdom, not a manifesto. But the subtext is bracingly political. “If you don’t like something” quietly assumes you have the right to judge your conditions, to name a wrong, to want better. For a Black woman poet who lived through Jim Crow, assault, silencing, and the daily grind of being underestimated, that assumption is not soft. It’s insurgent.

Then comes the pivot: “If you can’t change it, change your attitude.” Read shallowly, it risks sounding like the kind of stoicism bosses love because it keeps workers compliant. Angelou’s context complicates that. She isn’t absolving systems; she’s drawing a boundary around the one territory nobody can finally colonize: your inner posture. The intent is survival without surrender. When the world denies you leverage, she suggests an alternative form of agency that can’t be legislated away.

The craft is in the conditional logic. It’s not “always be positive,” which would be sentimental and dishonest; it’s a decision tree for dignity. Try to alter the material facts. If the facts won’t budge, don’t let them author your spirit. The line works because it refuses melodrama and offers a hard bargain: either act, or reframe, but don’t stay stuck performing your own misery.
