Parenting & Family Quote by Ursula K. Le Guin

"If you want your writing to be taken seriously, don't marry and have kids, and above all, don't die. But if you have to die, commit suicide. They approve of that"

About this Quote

Le Guin is doing what she does best here: smuggling a dagger inside a joke. The line reads like career advice, but it’s really an indictment of how “serious” culture polices artists’ bodies. Marriage, children, death: ordinary facts of human life become disqualifying conditions the moment you’re a writer who wants entry into the canon. The punchline isn’t just that the gatekeepers are cruel; it’s that their cruelty has a taste, a preference, a brand.

The subtext is about control. Institutions that anoint “serious” literature often reward the image of the writer as unencumbered, solitary, and perpetually available to the work. Domesticity is framed as distraction, especially for women, as if care and art can’t coexist unless one is hidden. Even death is unacceptable because it interrupts the production line; the market wants authors alive to tour, explain, clarify, and keep selling the myth of the author as a constantly updating content source.

Then Le Guin twists the screw: if you must die, do it yourself - “they approve of that.” Suicide becomes the grotesque exception that confirms the rule. Tragic self-destruction flatters a romantic narrative the culture industry knows how to package: the tormented genius, the clean ending, the collectible martyrdom. It’s not empathy; it’s aesthetics. Le Guin’s cynicism lands because it names the unspoken bargain: be legible to our fantasies, or we’ll withhold seriousness. The wit keeps it from preaching, while the bitterness makes sure you don’t miss the target.
