Daily Inspiration Quote by Luis Bunuel

"If you were to ask me if I'd ever had the bad luck to miss my daily cocktail, I'd have to say that I doubt it; where certain things are concerned, I plan ahead"

About this Quote

It lands like a toast and a confession: bad luck, for Bunuel, isnt war or censorship but the indignity of an unscheduled dry spell. The joke is built on a sly reversal. Most people "plan ahead" for disasters; Bunuel plans ahead for pleasure. That inversion is pure Bunuel: the bourgeois virtues of prudence and self-control get rerouted into the service of appetite, exposing how thin the line is between respectable routine and ritualized compulsion.

The phrasing matters. "If you were to ask me" pretends at modesty, a hypothetical civility, while the answer slips into evasive certainty: "Id have to say that I doubt it". He doesnt quite admit dependence; he performs it with a wink, letting decorum do the lying. "Bad luck" is the key alibi, reframing a self-chosen habit as fate, as if the universe, not the drinker, is responsible for continuity.

Context gives the quip extra bite. Bunuel spent his life puncturing pieties - religious, moral, class-based - often by taking them at their own word and pushing them a notch too far. The daily cocktail becomes a miniature of that method: a civilized emblem (the aperitif, the social glass) turned into a disciplined necessity. Its not a drunken boast so much as an indictment of respectability: we all have our liturgies; his just comes with ice and a measured pour.
