Life & Wisdom Quote by Samuel Johnson

"If your determination is fixed, I do not counsel you to despair. Few things are impossible to diligence and skill. Great works are performed not by strength, but perseverance"

About this Quote

Johnson writes like a man trying to rescue ambition from melodrama. The opening clause is a verbal handshake with resolve: "If your determination is fixed" grants the listener dignity and agency, then immediately refuses the cheap romance of suffering. "I do not counsel you to despair" is pointedly clinical, the voice of an older moralist allergic to grand pity. It implies a culture where despair could be worn as an aesthetic - a fashionable pose among the educated - and Johnson, ever the realist, swats it away.

The real move is how he reassigns credit. "Few things are impossible to diligence and skill" replaces heroic destiny with a pair of unglamorous tools. Diligence is time, repetition, the daily return; skill is craft, learned competence, the part you can actually improve. Together they form a Protestant-work-ethic argument without the sermonizing: your limits are less metaphysical than logistical.

Then comes the sting against macho mythmaking: "Great works are performed not by strength, but perseverance". Strength flatters the ego because it suggests an innate advantage, a chosen-ness. Perseverance indicts everyone equally; it implies boredom, setbacks, and the humiliating need to continue. Johnson, who battled illness, depression, and financial insecurity while producing monumental criticism and lexicography, isn’t selling uplift. He’s offering a survival strategy for the writer, the striver, the person tempted to dramatize their obstacles into a reason to quit.

In 18th-century Britain, "great works" meant national letters, scholarship, and public reputation - achievements built in ink, not muscle. Johnson’s intent is practical: keep going. His subtext is sharper: stop waiting to feel powerful; power is what sticking around looks like.
