"If you're a Conservative, why aren't you behind conserving the land?"
About this Quote
The intent is to reroute a familiar American instinct - suspicion of centralized power, loyalty to home terrain - toward environmental stewardship. He’s not arguing from left-wing doctrine; he’s baiting an internal contradiction. If you claim to value inheritance, continuity, and limits, how do you reconcile that with strip-mined mountains, poisoned rivers, or development that treats place as disposable? The subtext is accusation disguised as common sense: you don’t actually “conserve” anything; you conserve hierarchies, profit arrangements, and the right to consume without being questioned.
Kesey’s context matters. Coming out of the mid-century West, counterculture, and the era when “anti-establishment” energies were being sorted into partisan bins, he’s insisting that love of land shouldn’t be owned by a single side. The question form is key: it invites a reply while cornering the respondent. Answering honestly forces a choice - either expand conservatism to include ecological responsibility, or admit the word has been hollowed out and repurposed. That’s the sting, and the dare.
