Creativity Quote by Courtney Love

"I'll always prefer to play with women and hang out with women, and I'll always be a feminist. But let me tell you something. Gloria Steinem never helped me out; Larry Flynt did"

About this Quote

Courtney Love makes feminism sound less like a club membership and more like a street fight over who actually shows up when the cops arrive. The opening pledge - preferring women, identifying as feminist - is there to block the easy dismissal that she is selling out her gender. Then she drops the blade: Gloria Steinem, the movement’s most legible, respectable avatar, “never helped me out,” while Larry Flynt, porn king and professional provocateur, did. The shock isn’t accidental; it’s the point. Love is indicting a version of feminism that prizes symbolic purity, media-friendly leadership, and boundary-policing over messy, material solidarity.

The subtext is transactional and bruisingly specific: celebrity feminism will applaud you when you’re inspirational and cut you loose when you’re radioactive. Love’s career has long lived in that radioactive zone - vulgarity, rage, ambition, grief, accusations, courtroom narratives, tabloid mythology. By invoking Flynt, she’s not endorsing misogyny as much as exposing a cruel cultural math: the man branded as obscene offered tangible support, while the movement that should have claimed her offered branding, not backup.

It also reads as a jab at respectability politics. Steinem stands for feminism that can sit in a greenroom with senators; Flynt stands for the First Amendment gutter and the legal-industrial circus. Love is saying she survived in the gutter. Her intent is to force the audience to ask an uncomfortable question: when a woman is complicated, disliked, or “unacceptable,” who defends her - and why is it so often the people we’re told to despise?
