Daily Inspiration Quote by W. Somerset Maugham

"I'll give you my opinion of the human race in a nutshell... their heart's in the right place, but their head is a thoroughly inefficient organ"

About this Quote

Maugham doesn’t bother dressing up his verdict: humanity is morally well-meaning, intellectually slapdash. The line lands because it flatters and condemns in the same breath. “Their heart’s in the right place” is the soft pat on the head, the concession you make before the knife goes in. Then comes the pivot: the mind, that supposedly crowning feature of the species, is “a thoroughly inefficient organ.” Not wicked, not even broken - just comically underpowered for the jobs we insist it can do: govern ourselves, interpret motives, foresee consequences, learn from history.

The “in a nutshell” framing is doing extra work. It suggests a man who has said this before, often, and has run out of patience for nuance. That tone fits Maugham’s stage-trained economy: he writes as someone who understands that audiences love a neat paradox more than a careful treatise. The insult is also oddly clinical. By calling the head an “organ,” he reduces lofty ideals like reason and progress to faulty biological equipment. It’s a scalpel of a joke, and it lands with the cool authority of someone who has watched people up close - in drawing rooms, colonial outposts, and intimate betrayals.

Context matters: Maugham lived through the collapse of Victorian certainties, World War I, and the interwar drift toward another catastrophe. His skepticism isn’t abstract cynicism; it’s a worldly diagnosis. The subtext is bleakly modern: good intentions don’t save you from bad thinking, and sentiment, untutored by judgment, can become just another engine of harm.
