War & Peace Quote by Gertrude Stein

"In a war, everybody always knows all about Switzerland, in peace times, it is just Switzerland, but in war time it is the only country that everybody has confidence in, everybody"

About this Quote

Stein takes Switzerland - a country that normally registers as scenic shorthand - and turns it into a punchline about how panic rewires attention. The line rambles on purpose, with its looping repetitions ("everybody", twice) and its almost childlike insistence. That syntax performs the very phenomenon she is describing: war produces a compulsive need to locate certainty, so the mind circles the same safe object again and again until it feels true.

The intent is less to praise Swiss neutrality than to expose how neutrality becomes a social technology. In peacetime, "it is just Switzerland": a place, a postcard, a category. In wartime, Switzerland becomes an idea other nations can outsource their trust to. "Everybody always knows all about" is a sly exaggeration. Most people don't know much about Switzerland; what they know is the myth: banks, borders, nonalignment, the promise that some institutions will remain standing when everything else is burning. Confidence, here, isn't admiration; it's desperation dressed up as consensus.

Context matters. Stein lived through two world wars and spent much of her life as an American in France, watching Europe turn volatile while Switzerland kept its reputation for stability. Her modernist ear catches the way wartime talk flattens complexity into a single dependable symbol. The subtext is cynical and keen: when violence spreads, we don't become better informed; we become more superstitious about "safe" places. Switzerland functions like a talisman - useful precisely because everyone agrees to believe in it.
