Love Quote by Arthur Schopenhauer

"In action a great heart is the chief qualification. In work, a great head"

About this Quote

Schopenhauer’s line splits human excellence with a surgeon’s cold confidence: courage belongs to the heart, competence to the head. It’s a neat binary, and that neatness is the point. He’s not offering a Hallmark taxonomy of virtues; he’s policing categories that modern life loves to blur. “Action” here doesn’t mean mere busyness. It suggests moral risk: stepping into consequence, exposing yourself, taking a stand when the outcome can wound you. For that, the “chief qualification” is not intelligence but a kind of inner largeness - the capacity to absorb fear, pain, and social backlash without shrinking.

“Work,” by contrast, is framed as the domain where sentiment is a distraction. A “great head” signals method, precision, the ability to see relations and solve problems. Schopenhauer’s subtext is anti-romantic in a sly way: we often applaud bravery as if it were genius, and excuse sloppy thinking as if passion sanctified it. He refuses both consolations. Heart can’t substitute for clarity; brains can’t substitute for backbone.

The context matters. Schopenhauer wrote in a Europe infatuated with grand ideals and heroic posturing, while he himself was famously skeptical about human motives and the stories we tell to dignify them. The aphorism reads like a rebuke to two common frauds: the clever coward who hides behind “analysis,” and the warm-hearted bungler who demands credit for good intentions. It’s also a warning that modern society rewards the second type in public and the first in institutions, leaving actual responsibility stranded between them.
