Creativity Quote by Peter Tosh

"In the beginning there was the word. The word was Jah. The word is in I, Jah is in I. I make what is good, better, and what is better, best. I follow this in every aspect of life"

About this Quote

Tosh opens by hijacking one of the West’s most culturally loaded sentences and rerouting its power supply. “In the beginning there was the word” is straight out of the Gospel of John, but he flips the theology: the Word isn’t abstract Logos, it’s “Jah,” the Rastafari name for God. That move isn’t just spiritual remixing; it’s a declaration that colonial Christianity doesn’t own sacred language. Tosh takes the master text and writes himself into it.

The sly engine here is the shift from “I” to “I and I,” implied in “The word is in I, Jah is in I.” In Rastafari speech, “I” isn’t ego; it’s a grammar of unity that collapses the distance between the human and the divine, the individual and the community. It’s also a linguistic resistance to systems designed to fracture Black identity. If Jah is “in I,” then dignity and authority are not granted by church, state, or record label. They’re intrinsic.

Then he turns mysticism into a work ethic: “I make what is good, better, and what is better, best.” That ladder of improvement reads like a credo for craft and survival, the practical side of prophecy. Coming from Tosh - militant, uncompromising, forever pushing against censorship and commercial smoothing - it carries an edge: holiness isn’t passive belief, it’s disciplined escalation in “every aspect of life.” The subtext is clear. Liberation is spiritual, yes, but it’s also something you practice, sharpen, and refuse to outsource.
