Wit & Attitude Quote by Simone de Beauvoir

"In the face of an obstacle which is impossible to overcome, stubbornness is stupid"

About this Quote

Stubbornness usually gets marketed as virtue because it looks like character from a distance: jaw set, spine straight, destiny conquered. Beauvoir punctures that romance with a single, cold condition: the obstacle is impossible. At that point, perseverance stops being moral and starts being performative - a refusal to update your understanding of reality.

The line is doing more than dispensing self-help pragmatism. It’s a philosophical jab at the consoling myths that prop up bad faith: the habit of treating freedom as a slogan rather than a practice. For Beauvoir, the ethical life isn’t about clinging to an identity (“I’m not the kind of person who quits”) but about lucid engagement with the situation as it is, not as ego demands it be. “Stubbornness” here reads as vanity masquerading as principle: a commitment to one’s self-image, not to meaningful outcomes.

Context matters. Writing in a century of catastrophic “noble” commitments - nationalism, ideological purity, wars justified by honor - Beauvoir had reason to distrust the aesthetic of unbending resolve. Her existentialism insists that choices gain moral weight from their relation to concrete conditions and other people, not from how heroically they’re maintained. The punch of the sentence comes from its blunt diagnostic: sometimes the courageous act is not pushing harder, but redirecting will toward what can actually be changed.

It’s also a quiet feminist critique. Women were long praised for endurance of the unchangeable; Beauvoir’s “stupid” rejects martyrdom as a default virtue, demanding discernment instead of suffering-as-proof.
