"In the long winter evenings he talked to Ma about the Western country. In the West the land was level, and there were no trees. The grass grew thick and high"
About this Quote
The description itself is deceptively simple, almost hypnotic. “Level,” “no trees,” “thick and high” grass: plain words that do what propaganda often does best - remove friction. No trees means no obstacles, no shadow, no complicated forest that has to be felled or negotiated; it also means no visible sign of prior life. Wilder’s West is not “empty” because she argues it is empty, but because she edits it into emptiness with a child’s clear-eyed diction. The land reads like a promise: easy to see across, easy to claim, easy to imagine improving.
That’s the subtext that modern readers can’t unsee. The real West was peopled, governed, and violently contested; the “level” dream depended on Indigenous displacement and ecological transformation. Wilder doesn’t shout any of that because the intent isn’t documentary - it’s myth-making at the scale of family memory. The genius (and the danger) is how the myth arrives as comfort: a father’s voice filling winter darkness with a landscape that sounds like relief.
