"In the United States, the majority undertakes to supply a multitude of ready-made opinions for the use of individuals, who are thus relieved from the necessity of forming opinions of their own"
About this Quote
The phrasing matters. “Supply” and “use” turn belief into a commodity, and the citizen into a consumer. Tocqueville isn’t describing a dramatic tyrant barking orders; he’s describing the soft power of social consensus, where the cost of dissent is isolation, ridicule, or being marked as unreasonable. That’s the subtext: the majority’s real weapon isn’t force, it’s atmosphere. It sets the default settings for what “sensible people” believe, and deviating becomes an exhausting, socially expensive act.
Context sharpens the warning. Writing after traveling through Jacksonian America, Tocqueville admired democratic energy while fearing its gravitational pull toward sameness. He coined “tyranny of the majority” not as a conservative sneer at popular rule, but as an alarm about culture: newspapers, parties, churches, and civic life creating a single, loud common sense.
The quote still works because it anticipates a modern feedback loop: public opinion becoming prefabricated, then mistaken for personal conviction. When a society flatters itself as free, the most effective control is making people feel they chose the script.
