"In this country, the health concerns and the environmental concerns are as deep as in Europe. All the surveys show that. But here, we didn't have the cultural dimension. This is a fast-food culture"
About this Quote
“Fast-food culture” does double work. On the surface it’s about what’s on the plate; underneath it’s a theory of time. Fast food is efficiency marketed as freedom: no seasons, no patience, no lingering responsibility after the wrapper hits the bin. Rifkin is arguing that the same logic dominates American consumer life and, by extension, environmental politics: we want clean air, but we also want overnight shipping; we want “natural,” but not higher prices; we want climate action, but not slower growth. Europe becomes less a moral foil than a contrast in infrastructure and norms - denser cities, stronger food traditions, precautionary regulation, a political imagination more comfortable with limits.
Contextually, this fits Rifkin’s long-running critique of an economy built around throughput. He’s not saying Americans don’t care. He’s saying the culture has been trained to convert care into private lifestyle signals rather than sustained public commitments. The line is an accusation: you can’t recycle your way out of a system addicted to convenience.
