Science & Tech Quote by Isaac Asimov

"Individual science fiction stories may seem as trivial as ever to the blinder critics and philosophers of today - but the core of science fiction, its essence has become crucial to our salvation if we are to be saved at all"

About this Quote

Asimov swings a scalpel at two targets at once: the critics who dismiss science fiction as pulp, and the culture that treats the future as someone else's problem. The line is built on a deliberate mismatch. “Individual stories” might be “trivial,” he concedes, like comic strips or B-movies, but then he yanks the reader up to an apocalyptic altitude: the genre’s “essence” is “crucial to our salvation.” That jump is the point. He’s arguing that seriousness isn’t a matter of prestige packaging; it’s a matter of mental equipment.

The insult “blinder critics and philosophers” is also doing work. Asimov isn’t anti-intellectual; he’s calling out a strain of intellectual vanity that mistakes cynicism for discernment and ignores popular forms where new anxieties first surface. Science fiction, at its best, is a rehearsal space for consequences: what happens when technology scales faster than wisdom, when institutions lag behind invention, when humanity becomes powerful enough to accidentally erase itself. Coming from a working scientist, “salvation” doesn’t read as religious melodrama so much as systems thinking with a pulse.

Context matters: Asimov’s career straddled the nuclear age, the space race, and the early computer revolution, when “tomorrow” stopped being a metaphor and became a policy problem. The subtext is a warning about imagination as civic infrastructure. If you can’t picture alternative futures - including grim ones - you can’t choose, regulate, or build your way toward better outcomes. In that sense, science fiction isn’t escape. It’s a survival skill.
