"Influence is like a savings account. The less you use it, the more you've got"
About this Quote
The intent is practical, almost pastoral: a counsel against the ego-driven reflex to throw your weight around. Young isn’t romanticizing passivity. He’s describing a social economy where influence is partly a reputation for fairness and self-control. If people expect you to muscle them, they start building defenses. If they expect you to listen, they relax, and the room becomes persuadable. The “less you use it” line doesn’t mean never act; it means don’t cheapen your authority by making it routine, petty, or performative.
The subtext is also about moral leadership. As a clergyman and a major figure in the civil rights movement and later in politics, Young operated in spaces where persuasion mattered as much as position. In coalition-building, you can’t afford to win every minor skirmish; you need relationships intact for the fights that count. Influence “saved” is influence that still carries surprise, gravity, and legitimacy when you finally draw on it.
There’s an implicit critique of transactional politics here: if you keep cashing in favors, you reveal your motives and exhaust your credit. The most durable authority is the kind people believe you could use, but choose not to.
