Politics & Power Quote by Omar Bongo

"Instead of ideological objectives of a political nature, today we are faced with ideological objectives of economic nature"

About this Quote

Power doesn’t retire; it just changes costumes. When Omar Bongo warns that political ideology has been replaced by economic ideology, he’s pointing to a quieter kind of coercion: the way budgets, loans, trade deals, and “development” plans can do the work that slogans and party manifestos used to do.

Coming from a long-ruling Gabonese statesman, the line carries a double edge. On one level, it’s a diagnostic of the post-Cold War shift, when the grand political binaries that structured African diplomacy and aid (capitalist vs. socialist, “non-aligned” vs. aligned) began to fade. In their place: market “reforms,” debt conditionality, extractive contracts, and the language of efficiency. Economic policy stops being treated as a set of choices and gets framed as inevitability. That’s the ideological move: presenting a political order as mere common sense.

The subtext is also defensive. Bongo governed in a system often criticized as patronage-heavy and authoritarian, and this formulation subtly relocates the pressure point. If governance is judged less by elections and more by macroeconomic compliance, leaders can argue they’re navigating external imperatives, not simply exercising domestic control. It’s a way of naming global power without naming it directly: the IMF, multinational oil interests, and donor states become the new ideologues.

What makes the sentence work is its blunt reversal. It refuses the comforting story that history “moved on” from ideology. It insists ideology is still here; it just speaks fluent economics now.
