Daily Inspiration Quote by Roland Allen

"It certainly must help us if we recognize that it is the presence of the Holy Spirit which creates a unity which we can never create"

About this Quote

Allen slips a quiet grenade into the church’s favorite daydream: that unity can be engineered. The sentence is built to puncture institutional optimism. “It certainly must help us” sounds pastoral, almost mild, but it’s a rhetorical trapdoor into a hard claim about limits. The repetition of “create” draws a bright line between human design and divine generation, and the final clause - “which we can never create” - lands like a verdict on committees, creeds-as-contracts, and denominational diplomacy.

The specific intent is corrective. Allen, writing out of the late-19th/early-20th century Protestant missionary world, had seen how easily the church exported its factionalism along with the gospel: competing missions, imported church polities, and unity treated as an administrative target. His point is not that structure doesn’t matter, but that structure cannot substitute for the Spirit. He’s trying to re-center unity as a consequence of shared life rather than a product of shared paperwork.

The subtext is a rebuke to control. If unity is “created” by the Spirit’s presence, then it cannot be coerced by hierarchy, purchased by compromise, or achieved by public relations. That’s both liberating and destabilizing: liberating because it releases Christians from the fantasy that they can manage spiritual outcomes; destabilizing because it delegitimizes the church’s instinct to equate unity with uniformity.

Allen’s line also smuggles in a demand for humility. It invites the uncomfortable possibility that the Spirit may be present across boundaries we prefer to police - and that the most “unified” institution may still be spiritually hollow.
