Pavlov’s cool, almost bureaucratic phrasing hides a small ethical earthquake. “It goes without saying” is doing heavy lifting: he treats moral justification as self-evident, as if the reader has already signed the same social contract that places scientific output above nearly everything else. The sentence frames “precautions” not as compassion but as procedure, a checklist inherited from surgeons. That comparison is strategic. Surgeons occupy a culturally sanctified role: they cut bodies open, but under the halo of healing. By borrowing their rituals, Pavlov launders the violence of experimentation into the cleanliness of medicine.

The intent is practical and reputational at once. He wants to reassure skeptical audiences that his lab isn’t a butcher shop, while also insisting that care is simply good methodology. Note the ordering: “more confidence” and “avoid wasting time and labour” come first; “spare our experimental animals” arrives last, grammatically and morally subordinate. Animal welfare is presented as efficiency’s byproduct, not its rival. Even “as much as possible” keeps empathy safely conditional.

Context matters: Pavlov is writing from a period when physiology was professionalizing, competing for legitimacy, and increasingly dependent on animal models. Public unease existed, but so did a strong belief in progress through controlled suffering. The subtext is a modern scientific stance in embryo: ethics as risk management. Treat the animal like a patient not because it is a patient, but because the experiment works better - and because the world, increasingly, is watching.
