Science & Tech Quote by Thor Heyerdahl

"It is also rarer to find happiness in a man surrounded by the miracles of technology than among people living in the desert of the jungle and who by the standards set by our society would be considered destitute and out of touch"

About this Quote

Heyerdahl is puncturing a very modern illusion: that comfort scales automatically into contentment. Coming from an explorer who built a career arguing that “primitive” peoples were neither primitive nor peripheral, the line works less as a romantic postcard from the jungle than as an indictment of the industrial imagination. Technology appears here not as villainous machinery but as a kind of ambient weather: miracles everywhere, yet a curiously joyless climate.

The sentence turns on two loaded contrasts. “Surrounded” suggests saturation, even suffocation; “miracles of technology” implies reverence without gratitude, a society that treats invention as salvation while quietly allowing it to become requirement. Against that, the “desert of the jungle” is a deliberately paradoxical phrase, collapsing stereotypes and reminding the reader how thin our categories are. “Destitute and out of touch” is the real target. Heyerdahl isn’t praising hardship; he’s mocking the arrogance of a metric that confuses connection (to devices, markets, trends) with being “in touch” with life.

Context matters: mid-20th-century exploration literature often sold the exotic, but Heyerdahl’s project also challenged Western historical gatekeeping and the idea that progress only travels one direction. His subtext is ethical as much as psychological: a civilization that can manufacture wonders yet struggles to manufacture happiness should interrogate its definitions of wealth, success, and “advancement.”
