Life & Wisdom Quote by Rainer Maria Rilke

"It is good to be solitary, for solitude is difficult; that something is difficult must be a reason the more for us to do it"

About this Quote

Rilke turns loneliness into a discipline, almost a dare. “It is good to be solitary” doesn’t romanticize the hermit’s life so much as reframe discomfort as proof of value: solitude is “difficult,” and difficulty itself becomes the credential. The line works because it refuses the modern assumption that feeling bad is evidence something is wrong. For Rilke, feeling bad can be evidence you’re finally in contact with the real.

The intent is quietly pedagogical. Rilke isn’t praising isolation as a lifestyle brand; he’s giving permission to stop treating aloneness as social failure. The subtext is about maturation: solitude forces you to confront your own interior weather without outsourcing meaning to a crowd, a partner, or constant stimulation. In that sense, “solitary” is less about physical separation than about psychic independence, the capacity to sit with ambiguity and keep going.

Context matters. Rilke’s writing, especially in letters and early-20th-century reflections on art, circles the idea that creative life requires long stretches of unglamorous inwardness. Europe at the turn of the century was accelerating toward mass society, mass politics, mass culture. Against that noise, Rilke makes a countercultural claim: the hard thing isn’t optional; it’s formative. He smuggles an ethic into a sentence - not the hustle culture version of “embrace the grind,” but a spiritual training regimen.

The brilliance is the moral inversion: difficulty, usually a deterrent, becomes the reason. Solitude isn’t a punishment; it’s an apprenticeship.
