Leadership Quote by Francois de La Rochefoucauld

"It is not enough to have great qualities; We should also have the management of them"

About this Quote

Aphorisms like this are Rochefoucauld at his most surgical: a compliment with a trapdoor. He grants the existence of "great qualities" only to pivot immediately to the less romantic truth that virtues are not self-executing. Character, in his view, is raw material; what matters is the choreography.

"Management" is the loaded word. It drags morality out of the chapel and into the salon, where reputations are made, alliances negotiated, and every impulse has an audience. Rochefoucauld wrote from inside the machinery of French aristocratic life and its bruising politics (civil unrest, court intrigue, the economics of favor). In that world, courage without timing becomes recklessness, generosity without boundaries becomes a liability, wit without restraint becomes an enemy factory. Even sincerity can be a form of vanity if it insists on being heard.

The subtext is cynically modern: goodness is inseparable from self-governance and self-presentation. He isn't merely advocating prudence; he's puncturing the comforting idea that virtue is a stable inner possession. Qualities have to be deployed, rationed, and sometimes disguised. The moral life becomes a kind of strategy game, not because people are evil in melodramatic ways, but because social life is competitive and perception is power.

That tension is why the line still lands. It anticipates our era of personal branding and "authenticity" managed like a portfolio. Rochefoucauld offers no uplift, just a bracing reminder: the difference between admirable and effective is often the difference between having a virtue and knowing how to use it.
