Love Quote by Francois de La Rochefoucauld

"It is not in the power of even the most crafty dissimulation to conceal love long, where it really is, nor to counterfeit it long where it is not"

About this Quote

Love, in La Rochefoucauld's hands, isn't a sacred mystery; it's a tell. The line carries the cool confidence of a court anatomist: you can rehearse manners, stage virtues, polish a mask, but love leaks. Not because love is magically pure, but because it is materially inconvenient. It rearranges priorities, interrupts self-control, forces a body and a schedule to declare allegiance. A "crafty dissimulation" can manage a scene; it can't manage the long run of habits.

The second clause is the real knife: you can't counterfeit love for long where it isn't. That's less romantic than it is social. At court, affection was currency and strategy, and the temptation to perform devotion - to secure patronage, marriage prospects, proximity to power - was constant. La Rochefoucauld, whose Maximes are basically moral X-rays, treats emotion as a behavior pattern under pressure. Performances fail not because audiences are wise, but because the performer gets tired, costs rise, and the smallest inconsistencies multiply.

There's also a sly leveling here. "Even the most crafty" can't do it. The line flatters no one, least of all the intelligent schemer. It implies that love, when present, is stronger than vanity; when absent, vanity isn't strong enough to sustain the charade. In a culture obsessed with appearances, this is both a warning and a comfort: the truth comes out, not through confession, but through erosion.
