"It is one of the blessings of this world that few people see visions and dream dreams"
About this Quote
“Visions” and “dream dreams” aren’t Hallmark aspirations; they suggest prophecy, obsession, even a kind of holy disobedience. In Black Southern folk culture (a world Hurston documented with anthropologist’s rigor and dramatist’s ear), visionaries can be revered and ridiculed in the same breath. They’re also dangerous to the social order. If too many people start dreaming “dream dreams” (note the doubling, as if ordinary dreaming isn’t enough), the local hierarchy has a problem: husbands, bosses, preachers, and town arbiters lose their monopoly on what counts as reality.
As a dramatist and novelist steeped in performance, Hurston also understands the cost of being the one who sees more than is convenient. Vision can mean isolation, accusation, the burden of making art out of what others prefer to keep unspoken. The line’s real bite is its ambivalence: yes, it may be a blessing that most people don’t carry that fever. It’s also a tragedy, because without those few, nothing changes.
