In context, that matters because Flavin’s signature materials - off-the-shelf fluorescent tubes, industrial fixtures, standardized colors - arrive pre-depleted of artisan romance. He uses the hardware store as a scalpel. By choosing a medium associated with offices and storefronts, he stages a quiet revolt against the museum’s habit of sanctifying everything it touches. The light is literal, but it’s also a trap: the more “plainly delivered” it is, the more it destabilizes what you think you’re seeing. A tube on a wall becomes an atmosphere; a corner becomes a prism; the room turns into the sculpture’s real body.

The subtext is a preemptive strike on criticism. Flavin knows viewers will project spirituality onto luminous color, or narrative onto a spare arrangement. His insistence on clarity is partly sincere and partly defensive: a way to keep interpretation from turning the object into a symbol. Yet the line also reveals the joke at Minimalism’s center - when you banish metaphor, you end up making the conditions of viewing (space, perception, attention) the drama.
