Barth pulls off a theological mic drop by pretending to arbitrate heaven's playlist, then using it to smuggle in a sly anthropology. Bach is for liturgy: music as vertical architecture, disciplined praise, the sound of a cosmos held together by counterpoint and obligation. The joke works because it flatters Bach without making him cozy. In Barth's framing, Bach is what angels do while on duty.

Then comes the pivot: "en famille" and Mozart. The French phrase matters. It conjures domesticity, intimacy, bodies in a room - not the throne room but the living room. Barth isn't demoting Mozart; he's canonizing him as the music of creaturely life, the kind of joy that doesn't need to announce its piety to be spiritually serious. Mozart becomes the sound of grace experienced sideways, as play, conversation, flirtation, comfort.

Context sharpens the edge. Barth is a Protestant theologian wary of religious sentimentality and equally wary of a faith that forgets delight. He lived through an era that tested "high seriousness" to catastrophe; he knew what happens when duty is severed from humanity. So he refuses a binary: Bach for God, Mozart for humans. His subtext is that the divine isn't threatened by pleasure, and the holy isn't confined to solemnity. The angels can praise, but they can also laugh. And if heaven has a family table, Barth suggests, Mozart is the proof that salvation doesn't erase the everyday - it redeems it.
