Daily Inspiration Quote by Hjalmar Schacht

"It stands, essentially, for the application of increased energy to the efforts already undertaken by my ministry since 1934 with the results shown in the above statistics"

About this Quote

Bureaucratic language has rarely done so much moral laundering. Schacht’s line is a masterclass in technocratic self-justification: “increased energy,” “efforts already undertaken,” “results shown” all sound like the neutral diction of budgets and productivity. That’s the intent on the surface - to frame policy as continuity, efficiency, and measurable success. It’s meant to reassure elites, investors, and civil servants that the machinery of the state is humming, not lurching.

The subtext is where it bites. By anchoring everything to “statistics,” Schacht invites the listener to treat outcomes as self-authenticating, as if numbers can substitute for scrutiny of means and ends. “Energy” becomes a euphemism for escalation; “application” suggests rational management rather than political choice. Even the word “essentially” performs a trick: it narrows the debate to technique, quietly implying that the direction is settled and only the tempo is up for discussion.

Context matters because Schacht wasn’t just any economist. As a key financial architect of early Nazi economic policy, he helped engineer recovery optics and rearmament-compatible growth while presenting himself as a sober professional. In the mid-1930s, Germany’s economic “results” were inseparable from militarization, coercion, and the regime’s tightening grip. The quote works because it offers a comforting alibi: if progress can be graphed, responsibility can be outsourced to the spreadsheet. That’s the seduction of technocracy in dark times - competence as camouflage.
