Life & Wisdom Quote by Ted Hughes

"It took the whole of Creation To produce my foot, my each feather: Now I hold Creation in my foot"

About this Quote

A small, almost grotesque boast: the universe sweated detail just to assemble a foot, a feather at a time, and now that foot claims to pin the universe down. Hughes loves this reversal of scale because it turns awe into appetite. Creation is no longer a sacred panorama you admire at a distance; it becomes something you can grip, crush, clutch, stand on. The line’s muscle is in the physicality of its theology.

The phrasing is deliberately manufacturing-heavy: “took the whole of Creation” sounds like an industrial bill of materials, as if existence were a supply chain feeding a single limb. Then the pivot - “Now I hold Creation in my foot” - is a punchline with menace. It reads like a raptor’s talon, a crow’s claw, a boot, a mythic giant: one body part becomes an instrument of domination. Hughes is dramatizing a predator’s consciousness, where perception and possession blur. To see is already to seize.

Contextually, this fits Hughes’s lifelong obsession with animal energy and the violent economies of nature. His poems often stage the nonhuman as a corrective to human self-deception, but he also exposes how quickly “nature” turns into a fantasy of mastery. The subtext is double-edged: humility (you are the product of everything) flips into hubris (everything exists to be taken). It’s a creation myth rewritten as a power grab, delivered in a single, clenched sentence.
