Science Quote by Barney Oliver

"It would be a pity if, frustrated by the price of travel, we elected to become a society that never made contact, that never gave SETI a fair chance"

About this Quote

There is a sly provocation hiding inside Barney Oliver's mild phrasing: the real catastrophe isn't that we might miss aliens, it's that we might choose smallness. By invoking "the price of travel", Oliver takes aim at a familiar political reflex - austerity dressed up as prudence - and flips it into a moral and cultural failure. "It would be a pity" is the genteel opening of someone who knows he's making a sharp accusation: a rich, technically capable civilization deciding it can't be bothered to meet anything beyond its own borders.

The word "contact" does double duty. On the surface, it's interstellar: SETI's whole premise is that listening is a kind of reaching out. Underneath, it's a comment on human self-isolation. If we stop traveling, stop exchanging, stop treating distance as something to be crossed, we don't just lose vacations and conferences; we lose the habits that make curiosity actionable. Oliver's fear is less "no aliens" than "no outward-facing society."

The SETI line is especially canny. He frames SETI not as an eccentric bet on little green men but as a test of civic character: will we sustain long-horizon, low-odds projects that express confidence in the future? In the Cold War and early space-age context Oliver inhabited - when big science depended on public patience and geopolitical will - "giving SETI a fair chance" reads like a plea against retreat. Don't let sticker shock turn into a philosophy.
