"It's a democracy and if I am outvoted, I have to accept the majority decisions"
About this Quote
The intent is practical, not idealistic. In a country forged through existential wars and constant security crises, the temptation is always to let urgency outrun procedure, to treat dissent as a luxury. Dayan’s line pushes back against the logic of emergency. He’s reminding colleagues and citizens that legitimacy doesn’t come from expertise, bravery, or battlefield reputation; it comes from submitting to the same rules as everyone else, even when those rules cut against your own judgment.
The subtext is also self-protective: democratic restraint is the only antidote to personality politics. Dayan was famous enough to become a shortcut for authority. By insisting he must “accept,” he signals that even the most lionized figure is, in the end, a vote among votes. It’s less an ode to majority rule than a warning: in democracies, the most dangerous moment is when the indispensable man decides he’s exempt.
