The image is clean and cinematic - a life raft and a boat moving side by side - but the sting is in the admission that “supportive” can be a comfortable posture. When you’re on the raft, your needs are obvious. When you’re in the boat, you’re steering, pacing, deciding how close to get, how much to give, when to rest. That’s not heroism; that’s management.

The line reads like someone who’s spent time in the interpersonal trenches where “being strong” becomes its own trap. Sedgwick isn’t romanticizing crisis. She’s naming a social script: caretaking is treated as virtue, so the caretaker gets both moral credit and a kind of control. You’re adjacent to the danger without being swallowed by it. You can “row alongside” and still keep your own dry seat.

The quote also smuggles in a critique of how we rank suffering. The raft looks worse, so we assume the raft-holder has it harder.
