Daily Inspiration Quote by James Hillman

"It's important to ask yourself, How am I useful to others? What do people want from me? That may very well reveal what you are here for"

About this Quote

Hillman sneaks a knife under the self-help pillow. Instead of the familiar mandate to “find your passion,” he reroutes purpose through demand: usefulness, other people’s wants, the social field you can’t meditate away. Coming from a psychologist who spent a career pushing back on tidy, achievement-oriented notions of the self, the line reads less like career advice and more like a corrective to modern interiority, where meaning is treated as a private product you discover alone and then “optimize.”

The intent is diagnostic. Hillman’s question is a probe for vocation in its older sense: a calling that comes from outside you, not just within. “How am I useful?” is blunt, almost unromantic, and that’s the point. It forces a confrontation with the ways our lives are already being read by others. People’s requests, expectations, and even their projections become data. He’s implying that identity isn’t a solitary essence; it’s partly an ecology of transactions, needs, and recognitions.

The subtext is also a warning. “What do people want from me?” can expose the role you’re slipping into by habit: caretaker, fixer, entertainer, scapegoat. Hillman doesn’t guarantee that what others want is healthy or fair; he suggests it’s revealing. The question tests where your energy reliably goes, what capacities others sense in you, and what patterns you might be unconsciously serving.

Contextually, it’s classic Hillman: soul is not a self-improvement project but a relationship with the world. Purpose, here, isn’t manufactured by willpower. It’s traced in the footprints you’re already leaving in other people’s lives.
