"It's marvellous, marvellous! Nothing will ever be as much fun. I'm going to photograph everything, everything!"
About this Quote
"I'm going to photograph everything, everything!" sounds naive until you notice the desperation tucked inside the exuberance. "Everything" is an impossible brief, the kind a young artist gives himself when he intuits time as an enemy but hasn’t yet learned to call it that. Lartigue grew up amid the privileged play-world of Belle Epoque France - racing cars, elegant women, sunny weekends - and his camera became a way to turn that fleeting, class-specific freedom into evidence. Not "art" in the solemn museum sense, but a private technology for bottling sensation.
The subtext is a bargain: if I record it, I can keep it. Of course he can’t. Photography freezes motion while quietly admitting that motion is what we lose. Lartigue’s genius is that he never pretends otherwise; he chases pleasure with the urgency of someone who suspects history is about to interrupt the party.
