Canned food is safe, portable, easy to stack in aisles; it’s also stripped of texture, context, and immediacy. By linking labels to preservation, Stipe suggests that naming can freeze a person into a version of themselves that’s legible to others but less true to their own ongoing changes.

The subtext is a plea for room: to be seen without being sealed.
