"I've been asked a great deal about the influence I've had with my work and it's impossible to say, you know"
About this Quote
Context matters: Shahn came up through immigrant life, the Depression, mural programs, labor struggles, and public controversies like the Sacco and Vanzetti case. His paintings, photographs, and posters were built to circulate, to be seen by people outside the salon. That’s precisely why "influence" is hard to measure; his images seep into civic memory, design languages, protest aesthetics, and the moral atmosphere of a moment. It’s not a direct line from artist to follower. It’s drift, reuse, dilution, and occasional ignition.
The subtext is also self-protection. Shahn understood that claiming influence invites a second question: influence toward what? Aesthetic innovation? Political persuasion? Propaganda? In mid-century America, those distinctions could be weaponized. So he answers like a public-minded artist who’s skeptical of celebrity accounting: the work is out there doing what it does, and the artist is the least reliable witness to its afterlife.
