Daily Inspiration Quote by Saul Bellow

"I've never turned over a fig leaf yet that didn't have a price tag on the other side"

About this Quote

Bellow’s line is a small, nasty magic trick: he lifts the Bible’s oldest symbol of modesty and reveals a retail sticker underneath. The fig leaf is supposed to be innocence’s emergency cover-up, the improvised decency that keeps shame from becoming spectacle. Bellow flips it and finds commerce. Not sin redeemed, not virtue restored - just a transaction hiding under the pretense of morality.

The intent is less to sneer at money than to diagnose how thoroughly money colonizes the language of virtue. A fig leaf isn’t just concealment; it’s a performance of propriety. By insisting every one he’s examined carries a “price tag,” Bellow suggests that respectability is often bought, sold, leveraged. Causes, institutions, even personal “values” can function as wardrobe: something you put on to be seen correctly, financed by someone, or traded for access.

What makes it work is the tactile specificity. “Turned over” implies a practiced gesture - the worldly observer’s habit of checking the underside of public decency. “Yet” gives it the weary cadence of repeat disappointment, the veteran’s certainty that the pattern holds. It’s funny in the bleak way Bellow often is: the joke lands because it feels true and because it refuses to flatter the reader as exempt.

Context matters. Postwar American life, booming and anxious, produced a culture where authenticity became a commodity and high ideals could be packaged as brands. Bellow, chronicler of intellectuals and strivers in that marketplace, turns a religious emblem into consumer detritus to say: the cover story is never just a cover; it’s a business model.
