Life & Wisdom Quote by William S. Burroughs

"Junk is the ideal product... the ultimate merchandise. No sales talk necessary. The client will crawl through a sewer and beg to buy"

About this Quote

Burroughs doesn’t describe a product so much as he sketches capitalism’s dream of a captive customer, then swaps in the ugliest possible case study: addiction. “Junk” is both literal heroin and a razor-edged metaphor for any commodity engineered to short-circuit choice. The first sentence lands like ad copy from hell: “ideal product,” “ultimate merchandise.” Those bland, corporate superlatives are the joke and the indictment. He borrows the language of marketing to expose what marketing would prefer to hide: the ideal consumer is not persuaded, just compelled.

“No sales talk necessary” is a brutal inversion of midcentury American optimism about persuasion, self-improvement, and the idea that wants are cultivated gently. Burroughs insists the clean story is a lie. Real power doesn’t convince; it conditions. “The client will crawl through a sewer” is intentionally degrading, not to shame the user but to demonstrate the system’s endgame: demand so total it overrides dignity, community, even basic survival instincts. The word “client” is doing extra work here, turning a desperate human into a business relationship, a revenue stream with a pulse.

Context matters. Burroughs wrote from inside the circuitry of dependency and control, and his broader work treats addiction as a prototype for modern governance: regulate supply, manipulate craving, monetize relapse. The line is cynical, yes, but it’s also diagnostic. He’s warning that the most successful markets don’t sell happiness; they sell need, then call it freedom.
