Happiness Quote by Alain de Botton

"Kant and Hegel are interesting thinkers. But I am happy to insist that they are also terrible writers"

About this Quote

De Botton is doing something sly here: he’s granting the philosophers their pedestal while sawing off one leg. “Interesting thinkers” is the courteous nod that keeps the intellectual police at bay; “terrible writers” is the populist jab that aligns him with every reader who has ever felt bullied by German Idealism. The sentence is built like a shrug with a knife in it.

The intent isn’t just to dunk on Kant and Hegel. It’s to redraw the boundary of what counts as serious thought. De Botton’s whole brand argues that philosophy should be usable, consoling, and readable without an academic hazing ritual. Calling them “terrible writers” smuggles in a larger claim: obscurity is not a sign of depth, it’s often a failure of craft, and reverence for it can be a kind of class marker. If you can endure the prose, you get to belong.

The subtext also lets him pre-empt a common retort. Critics of de Botton often accuse him of simplifying big ideas into lifestyle advice. This line flips that charge: the problem isn’t that he simplifies, it’s that they complicated. He positions himself as a translator of genius that got trapped inside ugly sentences.

Context matters: Kant and Hegel weren’t writing for TED Talks; they were building new conceptual machinery in a language mid-transformation, often in dialogue with narrow scholarly circles. De Botton knows that, and still insists on the provocation because it speaks to a contemporary anxiety: if ideas can’t survive contact with a general reader, maybe the culture has mistaken difficulty for authority.
