Invoking God does two kinds of work at once. Domestically, it turns national endurance into something sturdier than mere politics. If Kosovo’s resources are “granted,” they are not provisional, not up for renegotiation by stronger neighbors or fickle international forums. Internationally, it softens what could sound like a territorial claim. “Granted to us” suggests stewardship rather than conquest, a careful rhetorical choice for a leader whose project depended on legitimacy as much as leverage.

The context is the late 20th-century breakup of Yugoslavia and Kosovo’s push for self-determination amid repression and then war. Rugova, known for emphasizing nonviolent resistance and diplomatic recognition, often spoke in a register designed to reassure outsiders while consolidating an “us” at home. The subtext is a quiet rebuke to the logic of empire: you can occupy a people, but you can’t annul what they believe is theirs by right, history, and providence.
