"Literature is always trying to show other parts of this immense universe in which we live. It's endless. I'm sure there will be other writers who will discover new worlds"
About this Quote
The subtext is also a rebuke to literary gatekeeping. If new “worlds” remain to be discovered, then the canon can’t be a closed museum; it’s a temporary chart. That matters coming from a writer who spent her career pushing against the comfortable machinery of character and story. Sarraute’s fiction is famously suspicious of the neat label, the tidy psychology. She’s arguing that realism’s old maps distort as much as they reveal, and that invention often looks like noticing what everyone else has trained themselves to ignore.
Her professional tag, “lawyer,” adds an extra charge: the law is the culture’s great system for fixing meanings, assigning roles, rendering verdicts. Sarraute’s literature goes the other direction, toward ambiguity and unfinalized experience. In the mid-20th century, after ideologies had shown their appetite for total explanations, her confidence in “other writers” reads less like optimism than a defense of plural vision: no single narrative gets to be the universe.
