Time & Perspective Quote by Henry Miller

"Los Angeles gives one the feeling of the future more strongly than any city I know of. A bad future, too, like something out of Fritz Lang's feeble imagination"

About this Quote

Los Angeles hits Miller like a time machine with the safety bar missing: it doesn’t merely feel new, it feels like it’s already gone wrong. The first sentence is a seduction - the city as prophecy, a place where tomorrow is visible in the street layout, the light, the speed, the ambition. Then he snaps the spell with that blunt pivot: “A bad future, too.” Miller’s talent is making dread sound like reportage, as if he’s just naming what any honest nervous system would register.

The Fritz Lang jab is doing double work. On the surface, it’s a cultural reference: Lang’s Metropolis had already fixed the visual grammar of modern dystopia - mechanized crowds, gleaming brutality, the human reduced to a moving part. But Miller calls it “feeble,” which is less an aesthetic critique than a way of saying reality has outpaced the artist. LA isn’t a movie warning us about dehumanization; it’s the set where the warning has been casually normalized. The insult also needles Hollywood’s self-mythology: a town built on imagination can’t imagine its own consequences with enough force to matter.

Context matters. Mid-century Los Angeles was sprawling into a car-driven, billboard-lit experiment in scale and surface - a city optimized for motion, consumption, and reinvention. Miller reads that not as freedom but as dislocation: the future arriving as convenience, anonymity, and social thinness. The line lands because it converts boosterish futurism into a diagnosis: progress as atmosphere, and the atmosphere already faintly toxic.
