Chamfort’s wit is surgical because it smuggles cynicism inside an elegant analogy. He isn’t arguing that love is “better” in some moral sense; he’s arguing that it’s easier to consume. Novels are engineered to please; history is obligated to be true, which means it includes boredom, repetition, and consequences.
