Life & Wisdom Quote by Thomas Merton

"Love is our true destiny. We do not find the meaning of life by ourselves alone - we find it with another"

About this Quote

Merton, a Trappist monk who deliberately stepped away from the noise of American life, still refuses the fantasy of the self-sufficient soul. Calling love "our true destiny" doesn’t read like greeting-card optimism in his hands; it’s a theological provocation aimed at the modern cult of autonomy. Destiny implies a pull stronger than preference, a demand built into human nature. Love here isn’t mainly romance or even mood. It’s vocation: a way of being summoned out of the self.

The second sentence sharpens the blade. "We do not find the meaning of life by ourselves alone" targets the idea that meaning is a private project you can complete with enough introspection, achievement, or spiritual self-improvement. Merton knew that trap intimately: monastic solitude can become a refined form of narcissism, a quiet room where the ego simply echoes louder. So he adds the corrective: meaning is discovered "with another". Not through the other, as if they’re a tool for your fulfillment, but with them, which implies mutuality, friction, obligation, and the humbling fact of another person’s reality.

In Merton’s mid-century context - postwar disillusionment, Cold War alienation, a booming consumer culture selling individual fulfillment - the line doubles as cultural critique. It argues that the self isn’t the final authority and that isolation isn’t purity. The subtext is almost political: real love breaks the sealed chamber of the ego, and that breach is where purpose enters.
