The second sentence sharpens the blade. "We do not find the meaning of life by ourselves alone" targets the idea that meaning is a private project you can complete with enough introspection, achievement, or spiritual self-improvement. Merton knew that trap intimately: monastic solitude can become a refined form of narcissism, a quiet room where the ego simply echoes louder. So he adds the corrective: meaning is discovered "with another". Not through the other, as if they’re a tool for your fulfillment, but with them, which implies mutuality, friction, obligation, and the humbling fact of another person’s reality.
